Spanish & French in the Abitur

The foundation course in year 11 offers students the chance to continue studying the second foreign language they started in lower secondary. At this level, second and third foreign language students are taught together with the same assessment criteria generally applying. Aside from straight language acquisition, lessons also convey basic knowledge of the history, politics, culture and literature of Spanish/French-speaking countries. Spanish artists, such as Velázquez, El Greco, Frida Kahlo, Goya and Picasso, have been prominent figures in European culture for centuries. Studying historical events, such as the Spanish Civil War or the conquest of America, broadens students’ historical knowledge and provides them with context to better understand contemporary events. A course focusing specifically on Spanish-language cinema will also be offered. After a minimum of six consecutive years of language learning, students are expected to reach CEFR level B2.

The foundation course in French is taught jointly to second and third foreign language students. The course has been designed to consolidate and develop the grammatical and lexical skills acquired at lower secondary level with the help of authentic fictional and non-fictional texts (narrative, recorded and illustrated texts as well as letters). Communication skills and insight into the language structure as well as intercultural learning are further focal points of the lessons. The main theme covered in year 11 is ‘Young people in Francophone countries’.

In years 12 and 13 (qualification phase), Spanish or French may be taken as a beginners course (Grundkurs). At this level, students may continue Spanish or French as second or third foreign language. The courses focus on culture and society and utilise both proven methods as well as new media. Theoretical teaching is frequently supplemented by museum, cinema and theatre visits to give students hands-on experience of the subjects discussed in the lessons. A school trip to Spain in conjunction with another department (art/ music/ drama/ history/ politics) is being considered.

Students may choose Spanish or French as 3rd examination subject (centralised written exam) or as 4th examination subject (internal oral exam). At this stage, students should have reached CEFR level B2/C1.

Spanish and French as part of the IB programme

Students may continue taking Spanish and French (Language B) within the framework of the IB programme. In the HL course, students are expected to have reached CEFR level B2 by the time they take their examinations.

Furthermore, students may take beginners Spanish (depending on the individual student profile) as second, third or fourth foreign language (Spanish ab initio). After the second year, students are expected to have reached CEFR level A2.

Examinations in the IB subjects include both centralised written exams and internal oral exams.
