The MSA (middle year) exam compares the performance standards of all of the 10th grade students in year 10 Berlin-wide. The exam is decisive for the student on applying for an apprenticeship or when seeking promotion into the upper secondary school. The MSA exam is obligatory at Nelson Mandela School for all of our students. The exam grade is made up of an examination and the final report grades.

Requirements for passing the MSA exam

German grades go from “1” (very good) to “6” (very bad). You need an average of “4” for a pass. You can have one “5” in one part but you need a “3” in another part to pass. A “6” in one part means the student has failed the whole examination. A repetition of the failed part may be granted. The entire exam can only be repeated once.
